Ontario G1 Licence Restrictions

Study selected Ontario G1 licence restrictions for accompanying drivers, passengers, alcohol, restricted roads and driving hours.

01

Choose a qualified accompanying driver.

Your accompanying driver sits beside you and must be the only other person in the front seat. They need a valid full G licence or higher and at least four years of licensed driving experience. Valid, unsuspended G2 time counts toward that experience. Check their licence and experience rather than assuming any adult can accompany you.

02

Know both alcohol conditions.

A G1 driver must have no alcohol in their blood while driving. The accompanying driver must have a blood alcohol level below 0.05%; if they are 21 or younger, it must be zero. A short trip or familiar route does not remove those conditions.

03

Check the time and the route.

G1 drivers may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. Certain high-speed roads are also restricted unless the accompanying driver is an Ontario-certified driving instructor. The handbook lists the restricted roads and applicable speed conditions, including restrictions on 400-series highways. Check that list before planning a route.

04

Every passenger needs a working belt.

Every passenger must have and wear a working seatbelt, with the proper child restraint where required. Other passengers sit behind the front seats. These notes cover selected conditions; read the complete official requirements before driving.
